A workshop on Libyan–Italian relations held in Tripoli on Monday has concluded with a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
Participants called on government and non-government institutions in Libya and Italy to make better use of growing political alignment between the two governments, saying it presents opportunities that should be further developed to serve mutual interests.
The recommendations urged both sides to reactivate mechanisms under the bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation, including technical and follow-up committees, and to resume joint meetings in line with the agreement.
They also stressed the need for sustained political and security consultations to help coordinate positions on issues of shared concern at bilateral, regional and international levels.
A joint technical review of existing agreements and memoranda of understanding was also proposed, with the aim of making more effective use of them.
On the economic front, the workshop highlighted the importance of boosting joint investment, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, fisheries and industries based on Libya’s natural resources. It also called for greater cooperation in transferring expertise and technology.
Participants further recommended the creation of a digital platform linking business communities in both countries, with a focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and exploring ways to facilitate Libyan exports to Italian and European markets.
In education, the recommendations included expanding scholarships for Libyan students, particularly in Italian language and culture, and strengthening academic and research partnerships between institutions in both countries.
The workshop also called for increased cultural and artistic exchange, including events targeting municipalities, youth and women, and proposed marking an annual “Friendship Day” on 30 August.
