Another speech that marked the session, but this time did not provoke riots or guests leaving the gallery, was that of André Ventura. The leader of Chega, who took to the stand with a green carnation that he said symbolized the Portuguese forced to emigrate, protested against praise for the guerrillas of the liberation movements “who killed Portuguese soldiers”, and argued that the 25th of April “is not the day of the captains of April”, but rather “the day of the captains of January, February, March”.
Mariana Leitão (Liberal Initiative) and João Almeida (CDS-PP) also spoke against the “owners of April”, while the PSD parliamentary leader praised the “full democrat” who “fights radicalism, but accepts the people’s verdict”identifying with the moderation already enunciated by the “center bloc” presented by the prime minister in the penultimate fortnightly debate.
In a session with fewer direct references to the Labor Package than would be expected, the secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, denounced the “inequalities that persist”, the co-spokesperson of Livre, Rui Tavares launched a petition asking the Government to move forward with the 25th of April Interpretive Center in Terreiro do Paço, communist Alfredo Maia mentioned the “backward path” of “right-wing policies” and blocker Fabian Figueiredo attacked those who try to “kidnap freedom”. Also single deputies, Inês de Sousa Real (PAN) pointed to an upcoming April 25th “with less insults and more dialogue” and Filipe Sousa (Together for the People) defended the “construction of a Portugal from Madeira to the Azores, from Minho to the Algarve, and not just the big cities”.
