Hungarian winemakers achieved outstanding results at this year’s edition of the prestigious Decanter World WineAwards (DWWA) in London. A Tokaji Aszú (late-harvest wine) even made it into the world’s top 50.
The Decanter World Wine Awards are regarded in the international wine world as one of the most demanding and prestigious competitions. At the 23rd edition of the event in London, nearly 17,000 wines from 58 countries were entered into the competition. To evaluate this diversity fairly and accurately, a high-caliber jury of 245 international wine experts convened, including 63 “Masters of Wine” and 24 “Masters Sommeliers.”
The absolute highlight from a Hungarian perspective came from the Oremus Winery in Tolcsva: its “6 puttonyos” Tokaj Aszú (2016 vintage) was honored with the “Best in Show” award. This officially ranks this noble sweet wine among the top 50 wines in the entire global competition—a major accolade for the Hungarian winemaking tradition.

The strict rules of the Decanter World Wine Awards demonstrate just how high the bar is set. A gold medal is awarded exclusively to wines that exceed the 95-point threshold. The gold medalists are then tasted again. Only the very best receive one of the coveted platinum awards (97 to 100 points). This year, only 198 wines worldwide achieved this distinction.
Hungary shone across the board in this rigorous selection process, securing 8 platinum medals, 15 gold medals, 52 silver medals, and 68 bronze medals.
The lion’s share of the platinum successes went to the Tokaj wine region. In addition to the overall winner, Oremus, wineries Antalóczy, Béres, Füleky, and Juliet Victor were delighted to receive platinum medals. The Balassa Bor winery even celebrated a double triumph, taking home two platinum medals.

But Hungary also made its mark beyond the realm of noble sweet wines.
In the red wine category, the Heumann winery from the Villány region impressed with its red cuvée “La Trinita.” Meanwhile, the Kreinbacher winery from the Somló region provided sparkling delights.
Their sparkling wine “Brut Classic” was also awarded a platinum medal. Kreinbacher rounded out its success with another gold medal and two silver medals.
This outstanding performance proves once again that Hungarian wines and sparkling wines are among the absolute best in the world in terms of quality.
