“The solution depends on the approval of the Sahrawi people” (Foreign Minister)

Al-Shahid Al-Hafiz, June 10, 2026 (SPS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslam Basit, confirmed that the solution to the Sahrawi issue depends on the approval of the Sahrawi people, the owners of the land.

In a press interview with Algerian Radio Channel 1, Mohamed Yaslam Basit explained that all options presented to resolve the Sahrawi issue must be consulted with the Sahrawi people as the legitimate owners of the land.

In his response to a question about the letters sent by the Sahrawi party to the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Western Sahara, who led a visit to the Sahrawi party, the Sahrawi diplomat explained, saying, “We assured him of the continuation of the Sahrawi party and its openness to the continuation of the negotiating path within the framework of the efforts of the United Nations to reach a peaceful, just and fair political solution that enables the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs renewed the will of the Sahrawi party and its openness to engage positively with the efforts of the United Nations in order to reach an agreed upon solution through which the Sahrawi people exercise their legitimate right to self-determination.

Regarding the difficulties facing Mr. Staffan de Mistura, Mohamed Yeslam Bisset explained that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations faces great challenges, most notably the hardening of the Moroccan position supported by some actors in the United Nations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs indicated that de Mistura’s visit to the Sahrawi side comes within the framework of a tour he is leading in the region, with the aim of continuing and deepening the path and efforts sponsored by the United Nations to resolve the Sahrawi issue within the framework of international legitimacy and the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions.
