The world premiere of Theodysseydirected by Christopher Nolan, has once again placed Homer’s work at the center of current culture. The arrival in cinemas of the new film adaptation has been accompanied by an avalanche of reissues and new publications dedicated to one of the most influential epics in Western literature, also considered a regular read during the summer months.
The work narrates the journey of Odysseus, also known by the Latin name of Ulysses, on his return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, the protagonist faces monsters, mysterious islands, mermaids and the designs of the gods, while Penelope awaits his return and resists the pressure of the suitors.
Beyond strength, the character stands out for his intelligence, the ability to persuade and the ingenuity with which he faces obstacles. This human dimension has contributed to making him one of the most recurring characters in Western literature, revisited over the centuries by authors such as Pindar, Sophocles, Euripides, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe and James Joyce.
Nolan’s production has gathered a cast made up of recognized names, with the presence of acclaimed actors such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. With an estimated budget of $250 million, the film was shot entirely with 65mm IMAX cameras on locations in different countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland and Scotland.
The renewed interest in theodyssey it has also translated into new audiovisual projects. Among these stands out a future animated musical film promoted by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Jorge Rivera-Herrans, creator of Epic, the musical, an adaptation inspired by the work of Homer that achieved great popularity on social networks.
