The oldest neighborhoods, the percentage of married and separated people and the drop in birth rates, according to the latest Buenos Aires census

While the number of children and new births in the City of Buenos Aires decreases, the population of older adults takes on an increasing weight. This is confirmed by the results of the last Annual Household Survey of the City of Buenos Aireswhose results, which correspond to 2025, were published this week by the Institute of Statistics and Censuses of the City (Idecba).

The most relevant data reveals that the aged structure continues to deepen: the people aged 60 and over represent 22.2% of the total of the population, while the children under 9 years old represent the 12.7%.

Year-on-year data show a sharp drop in the number of births

If the population aging shown in these data is compared with the information available from 20 years ago, there appears to be an increase, but within expected values: in 2005, data from the same survey indicated that those over 60 years of age represented 20% of the population, and those under 9 years of age, 12%. Where a more abrupt drop is seen is in the number of births. In the last decade, the number fell from 43,716 per year to 24,690 per year.

The geographical distribution of the elderly population shows nuances: The northern area of the city is the oldest region, with 26.3% of people in this age range. There, the communes with the highest percentage of older adults are Comuna 2 (Recoleta) is 27.6%). Meanwhile, commune 14 (Palermo) is 26.1%. In commune 13 (Núñez, Belgrano, Colegiales) it is 25.6% and in commune 11 (Villa Devoto, Villa del Parque, Villa General Miter and Villa Santa Rita) it is 25.3%.

The northern area of the city is the oldest region, with 26.3% of people over 60NOELIA MARCIA GUEVARA/ AFV

On the contrary, communes 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios and Nueva Pompeya) and commune 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo) register the lowest values of older adults: 17.8% and 15.0%, respectively.

Marital status and widowhood numbers show a feminization of the final stage of life: There is a marked difference in widowhood within the group aged 65 and over: the 35.4% of women are widows, compared to only 10.4% of men in the same boat. This is surely related to the fact that aging affects men and women unequally. The weight of the population aged 60 and over is 24.6% for women, while for men it is 19.6%.. You can also see the impact of the gender variable with marital status.

Almost half of the population aged 14 and over (47.4%) is in a union, whether legal (26.2%) or consensual (21.2%).; Meanwhile, 30.1% are single (never in a union), 16.3% are separated or divorced and 6.2% are widowed.

In men, The percentage of those who are in a union (51.2%) is higher than that of women (44.0%).. On the contrary, women have a greater number of divorced or separated women than men (19.1% versus 13.0%), maintaining the same superiority among the widowed population (9.6% versus 2.3%).

The report shows relevant data about the decreased maternity status: The number of women who finished their reproductive cycle (over 50 years, according to the report) without having had children is increasing. The percentage increases as age decreases: It is 20.8% for those between 50 and 59 years old.; 18.6% of those between 60 and 69 years old and 16.7% for those 70 years old and over.

62.5% of women aged 14 and over have children: In the 25 to 29 year old group, mothers represent 29% and in the 30 to 39 year old group, they reach 61.2%. Among those who are mothers, the majority (72.4%) have less than three children; 41.1%, two children, and 31.3%, only one.

The percentage of women who are mothers varies depending on the place of residence, with values ranging between 73.3% in commune 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo) and a 45.6% in Commune 2 (Recoleta).

The majority of mothers (72.4%) have less than three childrenVahid Salemi – AP

The number of children per mother also shows disparities by commune. Mothers with less than three children represent, in communes 6 (Caballito), 14 (Palermo) and 5 (Almagro and Boedo), around 80%. Meanwhile, in Communes 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios and Nueva Pompeya) and 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo) they are around 62%. In these neighborhoods the highest percentages of mothers with more than three children are observed.

The Homes in the city are characterized by being small in size: on average, the number of people per home is 2.2. 39.6% correspond to single-person households and 25.2% to those with two members, while households of five people or more represent only 6%.

The number of household members shows differences between the areas into which the City is divided. Thus, in the communes of the Northern Zone of Buenos Aires, the weight of single-person households exceeds that of those in the Southern Zone (48.7% versus 31%). While the proportion of households with five people or more, in the South Zone, is higher than that of the North Zone (11.6% versus 2.4%).

More than three quarters of the city’s homes They are departments (77.3%). In commune 2 (Recoleta), almost all of the housing stock corresponds to this type of housing (99.6%). Houses represent 20% of the total number of homes. Communes 9 (Liniers, Mataderos and Parque Avellaneda), 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo), and 10 (Villa Real, Monte Castro, Versalles, Floresta, Vélez Sarsfield and Villa Luro) have the highest percentages of houses (43.1%, 42.9% and 40.1%, respectively).

He average years of study for the population aged 25 and over is 13.9 years. Communes 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios and Nueva Pompeya) and 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo) show the lowest averages in the city (12 years and 11.3 years of study, respectively). On the other hand, in communes 2 (Recoleta), 13 (Núñez, Belgrano and Colegiales) and 14 (Palermo) the average exceeds 15 years of study.

56.3% of the school population aged three years and older attends a state-run educational establishment. In eleven of the fifteen communes of the city, among which communes 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios and Nueva Pompeya, with 74.2%) and 1 (Retiro, San Nicolás, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, Montserrat and Constitución, with 72.1%) stand out, state participation prevails.

In communes 13 (Núñez, Belgrano and Colegiales), 2 (Recoleta) and 14 (Palermo), this last group presents the highest percentages (65.3%, 61.2% and 60.2%, respectively).

He 73.2% of the total employed population enters the labor market as a salaried employee and, in turn, 73.3% of the salaried population has retirement discounts. The self-employed population, the second most important category, represents 21.6% of the employed, below the weight it had in 2024 (22.3%).

The median income of city residents was $1,548,7501while that of the main occupation reached $1,426,181. Communes 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios and Nueva Pompeya) and 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Villa Riachuelo) stand out for registering an average income well below the city’s total ($1,060,991 and $986,530, respectively)).
