WE CANNOT SURRENDER TO VIOLENCE AND KILLERS!
The murder of Arlinda Zeka has shocked and angered us. Our deepest condolences to her family. Another woman was killed by the violence of a man, a family member of her husband. Another family was left with the pain of an irreversible loss. And a 12-year-old boy was left without a mother.
Since the beginning of this year, women and men, girls and boys have been killed in Kosovo. The publicly reported cases indicate 17 victims, eight of them women and nine men.
These numbers prove the heavy burden of murderous violence in our society.
The killing of women has a special social dimension, the patriarchal power, the control over the woman and the denial of her freedom. Although serious, over the years it is taking the form of femicide in our country, because the murders have motives and the nature of denying the right to life of the woman as such.
While the murders of men and boys also confront us with the culture of force, of revenge and of resolving conflicts violently, through weapons.
These are not isolated phenomena. The culture of the strong, the privileges gained through connections with the old power by one wing and the history of impunity left for about 2 decades have left serious consequences in our society.
Violence is not force. Rule over another is not authority. A gun is not an argument. Murder is an inhumane act. It is the end of man.
Protection of life also requires social justice, economic independence and accessible public services. Our government has worked and will work unstoppably to help every family, every woman, to rise economically.
Institutions such as municipalities, social work centers, the police, the prosecution and the court must prevent, protect, investigate and punish. Make them independent from the patriarchal mentality and the justification of violence against the weak. Their decisions cannot be guided by personal beliefs, prejudices or perceptions. They must be based on the morality that originates from the law and on universal human rights, based on the obligation to protect the life, dignity and freedom of everyone.
Any threat ignored can end in tragedy.
We do not accept that fear becomes a way of life, nor that violence is inherited as a social norm.
We cannot surrender to the killers, nor to the culture that justifies and protects them
