I HAVE PREVIOUSLY expressed the view that it would not be reasonable for Vincentians to expect that the new government would be able to correct in six months all the areas of agony which have burdened this society over the last twenty-five years.
It will take more than ten years of determined and focused effort to effect the necessary correction which our people seemed to reflect in the 1950s.
The results of the last elections was a clear statement that people wanted a change.They wanted a change in their circumstance.
The new NDP government indicated that they were prepared to address the people’s needs. They are therefore burdened to assert themselves and they must endeavour to address those situations which need urgent attention.
One such situation is the Arnos Vale river defense project which had been initiated when Miss Rene Baptiste was a member of Parliament, and she was intimately involved in the project. Unfortunately, the project was not completed so that today, the area from the bridge to the bend in the river down-stream is distinctly vulnerable this hurricane season.
It is not unreasonable to expect that if there is significant rainfall this hurricane season the important Arnos Vale Playing Field on which we had spent millions of dollars could well be significantly impacted.
