A new teacher needs analysis points to the need for more teachers and at the same time shows that there will still be a lack of housing for some of the newly employed teachers in Nuuk.
The school year 2026/2027 starts in less than a month. In the new school year, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq expects to create a total of 154 student classes, of which 40 will be special classes.
154 student classes are three more classes compared to the school year just ended.
The teacher needs analysis for the school year 2026/2027 shows that there will be a need for more teachers in the school area. At the same time, a memo from the Administration for Children and Schools indicates that there will continue to be a shortage of staff accommodation for the teachers in Nuuk. The teacher needs analysis was presented during the municipal council’s meeting on 17 June.
The analysis shows that in the coming school year, 2,882 students are expected in 16 urban and rural schools. The total number of students has increased by 126 students since last school year.
Based on the analysis, the administration estimates that funds should be allocated to five additional teachers. The need is due, among other things, to the restoration of family classes at Nuuk city schools, except for Atuarfik Ilasiaq.
Lack of accommodation for teachers
A memo from the Administration for Children and Schools also shows that there is currently a shortage of 30 teachers in Nuuk, including the five teaching positions that were approved at the AIA meeting on 9 June 2026.
25 teacher’s homes have been added, which are expected to be ready for occupancy on 1 September 2026. Even so, the waiting list is expected to include five teachers who will not be able to meet their housing needs. This is apparent from a memorandum presented to the municipal council during the same municipal council meeting.
According to the memo, there is therefore a need for five more staff homes to be able to cover all the teachers’ housing needs, provided they do not find a home themselves.
