In the Qingaaq station in the eastern part of Nuup Kangerlua, the power supply is temporarily not fully available. However, this must ensure that air traffic can continue, says Tusass. – We are aware that mobile phone coverage is of great importance to those who travel in the fjord. It is therefore not a decision we make without careful consideration, says the company’s director of engineering and infrastructure.
In the eastern part of Nuup Kangerlua is there an explanation if the mobile connection that was previously available while traveling west of Qingaaq and Qeqertarsuaq starts dropping out. The mobile connection in these areas has been temporarily weakened from Monday, Tusass informs in a press release.
– In connection with the establishment of air traffic control in Nuuk, there have been stricter requirements for radio communication. This requires the establishment of a new radio infrastructure for Naviair, which must ensure that air traffic can continue to be operated in accordance with the Danish Transport Authority’s requirements, the company writes.
Tusass expects that the mobile connection will not be at full capacity until August 2027. In addition to the degraded mobile connection, KNR’s FM radio signal from Qingaaq will also be weakened. It can be a nuisance for radio listening in the inner parts of the fjord, says the company’s director of engineering and infrastructure.
– We are aware that mobile phone coverage is of great importance to those who travel in the fjord. It is therefore not a decision we make without careful consideration. But we are in a situation where we have to prioritize the available power capacity to ensure continued aircraft operations. At the same time, we are working on a permanent solution so that coverage can be re-established, says Inooraq Brandt.
VHF connections and connections in the settlement will not be impaired
The deterioration of the mobile coverage will not lead to a deterioration of the VHF connections in Nuup Kangerlua, writes Tusass. In addition, Tusass promises that the mobile and FM connections in the village of Kapisillit will not be impaired.
However, the self-governed company has a request for the sailors.
– Tusass emphasizes that the mobile phone should not be the only means of communication when traveling at sea. Boaters should always carry a working VHF radio so they have the ability to communicate and call for help, even in areas without mobile coverage.
Permanent solution in August next year
Tusass is working on a permanent upgrade of the power supply at Qingaaq, which must ensure sufficient capacity for both telecommunications and the new radio infrastructure for air traffic.
– For Naviair, it is crucial to secure the communication systems that support the safe handling of air traffic to and from Nuuk. A reasonable balance has been found between the need for the new radio infrastructure and consideration for the other important services in the area until the permanent power supply is established. This has happened in close and constructive cooperation with Tusass, says Ole Eckhaus, Lead Advisor, Naviair.
The work is expected to be completed in August 2027, after which normal mobile coverage can be re-established according to the plan.
