Strasbourg (France), June 17, 2026 (SPS) – The Group of Friends of the Sahrawi People in the European Parliament held, today, Wednesday, at the headquarters of the European Parliament in the city of Strasbourg, a meeting devoted to discussing the latest developments related to the Sahrawi issue in light of the current political, legal and legal developments.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Andreas Scheider gave a welcoming speech, in which he stressed the sensitivity of the stage and the need to intensify efforts to ensure a stronger presence of the Sahrawi issue within European institutions, especially the European Parliament, and the role it may play in order to pressure the rest of the European institutions towards more positive positions towards the Sahrawi issue.
During the meeting, a member of the Polisario Front’s representation in Europe, Mr. Bassiri Labssir, gave a comprehensive briefing to the members of the group on developments in the national issue, addressing the latest developments in the international track and the efforts made by the United Nations to reach a just and lasting solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
The Sahrawi official also reviewed the human rights situation in the occupied territories, highlighting the continued grave human rights violations against Sahrawi citizens, including restrictions on human rights defenders, political activists, and Sahrawi media professionals.
The presentation also addressed developments in the file at the European level, especially in light of the rulings issued by the European Union Court of Justice relating to Western Sahara, and their legal and political repercussions on the European Union’s relations with the Kingdom of Morocco with regard to the region.
The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on ways to enhance solidarity work within European institutions, and to continue efforts aimed at keeping the Western Sahara issue among the priorities of the European political and legal agenda. (SPA)
