Berlin (Germany), April 28, 2026 (SPS) – The German government confirmed that its position on the Western Sahara issue is known and has not changed. The legal status of Western Sahara remains undecided, and it is the subject of a negotiating process taking place under the auspices of the United Nations.
In press statements yesterday, made by the spokeswoman for the German Foreign Ministry, Ms. Catherine Deschauer, on the eve of the German Foreign Minister’s visit to North Africa, the German diplomat said that the negotiating process taking place under the auspices of the United Nations is considered important, because it remains the only way to reach a just, lasting, and acceptable political solution for both parties.
In her response to a journalist’s question about the United Nations recommendations calling for holding a referendum to resolve the Western Sahara issue, and the German government’s position on this approach based on popular consultation, the German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman responded that her country’s government’s position is based on the conviction that the final status of Western Sahara has not yet been decided, and that there is a negotiating process taking place under the umbrella of the United Nations.
