The chairman of the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament, Bernd Lange, warned that the announcement of US President Donald Trump on the increase of tariffs on vehicles from the EU shows the unreliability of the United States of America as a trading partner.
Lange said that such moves undermine trust among allies and that close partners should not be treated that way. He pointed out that the EU has the right and capacity to respond clearly and decisively, relying on its own economic strength.
He considers the behavior of the US administration unacceptable, stressing that the European Union has respected the trade agreement reached last year in Scotland, which limited tariffs on most European products to 15 percent to avoid a wider trade conflict.
He also added that, according to the EU’s assessment, the United States had previously deviated from the agreement, especially through the introduction of higher tariffs on numerous products containing steel and aluminum, where the rates reached an average of 26 percent.
