The case is from Sunday and there are many controversies surrounding it. US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson identified the victims as embassy employees, while US media said they were CIA agents. Mexican authorities emphasize that President Claudia Sheinbaum was not informed of the presence of foreign agents operating in the country.
The two Americans and two Mexican officials died in a crash in northern Mexico after their vehicle, part of a convoy, veered off the road and plunged into a ravine. They were involved in a crackdown on illegal synthetic drug labs in the state of Chihuahua, which followed a three-month investigation.
Initially, the local prosecutor stated that the Americans were instructors engaged in training. However, he later specified that they had conducted a drone training course and subsequently asked themselves to join the convoy of Mexican policemen returning from the operation.
The case is now being investigated by Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office for possible violations of national security. Scheinbaum emphasizes that any foreign service activity in Mexico must comply with the law and be expressly approved by the authorities.
While the country has stepped up cooperation with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking under pressure from the Donald Trump administration, including through the extradition of drug lords, the Mexican government remains wary of joint operations and prefers interaction to be limited mainly to the exchange of information.
