What began as a family’s worst fear is now being challenged by police. Last night, relatives of Dangriga resident Jericho Humes said they believed he had been kidnapped after they reportedly received ransom calls demanding money for his release. But today, police moved to clear the air, saying there is no evidence to support claims of an abduction. Humes was last seen early last Wednesday, leaving home for work. When family members later went to check on him, they found his house in disarray, with broken windows and a forced door, fueling fears that something had gone terribly wrong. Despite those troubling signs, investigators say the kidnapping story does not hold up. Police insist they have not confirmed any ransom demands or proof that Humes is being held against his will. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith explains what investigators have learned so far, and what remains under active investigation.

“What I was told is that the relative of the person was spoken to and he said that there is no truth to that ramson situation. He did confirm that yes he saw a video but his brother is not that video. So it is a matter of a missing person that is still being investigated from that perspective. I was not even able to ascertain how the relative came in possession of the video, because certainly whoever sent it would need to be somebody investigated nuh. I don’t know if it was sent directly to him or something being circulated and information is being suggested to be his brother.”
