According to Jam Jam Online, in a report, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) discussed the draw between the national teams of Iran and Egypt in the third match of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup and announced that the fate of Amir Qalanewi’s students to the knockout stage depends on the results of other groups.
Iran’s national football team drew 1-1 against Egypt in their last match of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup on the morning of Saturday, July 6. A result that made Iran, by being in the third place of the group, wait for the results of other groups and compete in the table of the best third teams in order to advance to the final round of 16.
AFC wrote in its report that Iran came close to winning in the final minutes of the match, but Shoja Khalilzadeh’s goal was ruled out for offside after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and the opportunity for direct promotion was lost.
On the other hand, by winning this draw, for the first time in its history, the Egyptian national team managed to advance to the elimination stage of the World Cup and be placed in the round of 16 against Australia.
The Egyptians started the game offensively and scored a goal in the fifth minute by Mahmoud Saber. Later, Iran got a golden opportunity to compensate for the result from the penalty spot, but Mustafa Shubir saved his team’s goal by blocking Mehdi Taremi’s shot.
The pressure of Iran’s attacks continued and Ramin Rezaiyan scored the equalizing goal using the return ball. In the continuation of the first half, Shoja Khalilzadeh had a good chance to score, but his header went off the side of the goal.
In the second half, Egypt managed the game by keeping possession of the ball, and Iran made a lot of effort in the final minutes to reach the leading goal. Shoja Khalilzadeh’s goal was rejected in the lost time, and then Mustafa Shubir’s spectacular reaction against Saeed Ezzatollahi’s shot prevented Iran from winning, so that the match ended with a 1-1 draw.
