By: Jasmine Netzler, Gvt Press. The Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital have been gifted a modern Bipolar Electrosurgical Unit (TURP system) from the Mahidol University and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand.
The unit is a modern, specialized urological device used for transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

By using bipolar energy, the system conducts electrical current between two electrodes, allowing the use of conductive saline (0.9% NaCl) for irrigation instead of non-conductive fluids.
This significantly enhances patient safety by reducing risks of fluid absorption complications (TUR syndrome) and bleeding.
The equipment will improve access to specialised services in Samoa, reduce the need for costly overseas referrals, strengthen patient safety and clinical outcomes and enhance the capacity of the Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital surgical teams.

Presented in a handing over ceremony on Monday, 13 April – this vital medical equipment will significantly improve the quality of care for Samoan people, ensuring timely, effective, and dignified treatment near home.
The gifted equipment also came with a comprehensive set of urological instruments and consumables.⁸
Newly appointed Associate Minister of Health, Motuopua’a Seve Henney Afereti Papalii, spoke on behalf of the government during the ceremony.
Motuopua’a expressed Samoa’s sincere gratitude to the donors for their crucial contribution to national healthcare across the country.

“The Ministry of Health extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Kingdom of Thailand and Mahidol University for their continued partnership..”
The Associated Minister pointed out the important inclusion of ongoing training to be provided by the development partners, as welln as professional exchanges to support the development of Samoa’s health workforce.
