“In addition to phase II of the Pest interlacing tram, we will also begin the repayment of another old Budapest debt,” wrote Gergely Karácsony in his post on Thursday, in which, albeit conditionally, he promises that plans for the complete renovation of the Nyugati tér underpass can also be completed as part of the preparations for the Pest interlacing tram project.
According to the mayor, this is one of Budapest’s most important transport hubs, but it has not undergone significant renovation for 45 years, and he called its condition unworthy. The goals include accessibility and the creation of a safer, brighter, more modern space. Public lighting would also be improved, and new fire and emergency alarm systems would be installed, and the underpass would be equipped with a public restroom.
The post revealed that with the second stage of the Pest winding tram, the surroundings of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út, inner Váci út and Lehel tér can also be renewed. However, a specific date has not yet been announced.
