The CEU considers the result of the recent Hungarian election to be a significant political turning point, but the campus of the institution will not move back to Budapest – it was revealed from the answer that the CEU gave to the People’s word sent to find him.
“CEU continues to operate as one institution at its locations in Vienna and Budapest: the university’s campus will remain in Vienna, while its Budapest location will continue to play an important role in our research activities in the future,” they wrote in their resolution, in which they pointed out that both the Vienna and Budapest locations are developing significantly and contributing to CEU’s mission. The institution is committed to the principles of academic freedom, international cooperation and social engagement, and pursues these goals as one institution at both locations.
CEU moved from Budapest after the parliament voted to amend the Hungarian Higher Education Act on April 4, 2017. Pursuant to this amendment, a foreign university can only obtain an operating license in Hungary if it is also recognized as a higher education institution in its country of origin (in the case of CEU, the United States), and it also provides training there in addition to Hungarian training, and its diploma is considered a state-recognized higher education degree in Hungary.
In addition, it is also an important stipulation that the Hungarian state and the university’s home country must agree in an international treaty on the principle support of the institution’s operation at home, and that the Hungarian education office must also authorize the operation of the university.
The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that it was contained in the lex CEU they are not compatible with EU law.
