UPDATE 14.17 The government gives the green light to the bonus for teachers

The government led by Ilie Bolojan met on Tuesday morning, from 9:30, in an extraordinary meeting held in a hybrid format, convened shortly before the debate and vote on the censure motion initiated by PSD and AUR.

During the meeting, the Executive adopted an emergency ordinance establishing the granting of a teaching career bonus in the amount of 1,500 lei net, starting in May.

Teaching staff and auxiliary teaching staff from the state pre-university education, but also from the state university education, who are active, will benefit from this bonus. The measure covers the school and academic year 2025–2026 and is aligned with the eligibility rules of the Education and Employment Program 2021–2027.

According to the Government, the financial support will be granted in electronic form and can be used for professional training courses, the purchase of specialist books and other expenses necessary for the teaching activity. In the case of university staff, it also benefits teaching staff with the functions of lecturer, head of works/lecturer and university assistant, as well as auxiliary staff.

An important element of the measure is the fact that at least 65% of the amount granted must be used for professional training courses accredited or approved by the Ministry of Education and Research. The list of these courses and authorized providers will be published on the institution’s website.

The total budget of the program is estimated at over 413 million lei and will be provided by non-reimbursable European funds.

The premium can be used until the end of the school year, i.e. until August 31, 2026 for pre-university education and until September 30, 2026 for university education.

The official specified that the adoption depends on obtaining the approval of the Legislative Council, without which the project cannot be approved.

“We hope that by tomorrow morning, at 8:30, the Legislative Council will give us the necessary approval, which was not issued today, so that we can adopt the project in an extraordinary meeting of the Government. If we have the approval, we will absolutely adopt it”declared Pîslaru, at the Victoria Palace.

According to him, approval request it was sent on Monday afternoon, as an emergency.

“It was requested today at 3pm or so with the urgent request. There was plenty of time, but we understand it could not be issued in that time frame”Minister Nazare explained.

He also stated that another draft emergency ordinanceregarding agricultural land and a milestone in the PNRR, is in the approval procedure at the Legislative Council.

“It has all the approvals, the CES, everything, everything, everything, and it doesn’t have the Legislative Council. (…) We hope in the wisdom and support of colleagues from the Legislative Council to receive these opinions by tomorrow morning, at 8:30”, Dragoș Pîslaru also said.
