KUCHING (June 19): The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch’s upcoming 67th Sa’ati Night Commemorative Dinner will serve as a platform to strengthen party unity, nurture young leaders, and deepen ties with grassroots communities.

The dinner, scheduled for June 28, marks an important milestone in the branch’s 67-year history.

In preparation for the event, branch acting chairman Jong Yean Pin, together with organising committee chairman Lucas Lim and committee members, conducted a series of courtesy visits to party and community leaders.

Among those visited were SUPP secretary-general and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, party vice-president and State Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang, Phillip Yong representing the family of late party co-founder Tan Sri Stephen Yong, and Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak president Datuk Richard Wee.

All were formally invited to attend the dinner.

During the visits, Ting encouraged the branch to continue strengthening party unity, building closer ties with grassroots communities and creating more opportunities for young leaders.
He also urged members to improve their service to the people and remain responsive to community needs.

Tiang, meanwhile, emphasised the significance of strong conviction, teamwork and continuous engagement with the people in maintaining public trust amid a changing political landscape.

The branch said this year’s Sa’ati Night would go beyond a commemorative celebration, serving instead a platform to honour party’s history and bring together members across generations.

‘Sa’ati’, which means ‘Together as One’ in the Bidayuh language, reflects the values that SUPP has upheld throughout its 67-year journey.

The organising committee also visited Yong to honour the contributions of his late father, Tan Sri Stephen Yong.

Lim said the late party co-founder had fought for the rights of all Sarawakians regardless of race or background, laying a strong foundation for SUPP’s development.

During the visit to Wee, both sides exchanged views on economic development, community issues and cooperation between political and community organisations.

The branch said Wee’s leadership and record of service reflected the spirit of Sa’ati.

The dinner is expected to bring together former party leaders, members, grassroots workers, GPS component-party representatives, community figures and business leaders.

SUPP Kuching Branch said the gathering would also allow younger members to learn from the dedication and contributions of the party’s founders and past leaders.

It called on party members and the wider community to support the celebration and continue working towards a more united, prosperous and progressive Sarawak.
