No dinghies have sailed out on Sunday morning. The tradition of seal hunting is being paused this year.
Tradition is there seal hunting, which is launched in several cities in Greenland on Sunday morning – on National Day. But not in Nuuk.
After a long period of summery weather, the national day in Nuuk featured pouring rain and wind gusts of up to 21 m/s.
This caused Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq to cancel the morning program in Nuup Saava. It went beyond the seal-catching competition, the planned choral singing and the mayor’s speech. Instead, the mayor speaks Avaaraq Olsen at Nuuk Local Museum at 10. There is coffee at the local museum all morning from 9.30 to 12.00.
National dress show also cancelled
Kittat, which is a sewing studio and cultural history workshop in Nuuk, which produces, maintains and rents out the traditional Greenlandic national costume, was supposed to carry out a so-called Inuiaat show, where citizens could see several different national costumes.
However, this has also been canceled due to the weather, reports Kittat.
Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has made a new plan for the day and posted it on his Facebook page. The weather does not affect the planned activities this afternoon and evening, the municipality informs.
