– As America approaches its 250th Independence Day, we join in the celebration of freedom and opportunity. Perhaps America’s 251st birthday can be celebrated with the addition of its 51st state, writes Jeff Landry, followed by the American and then the Greenlandic flag.
In December 2025, Jeff Landry was appointed by US President Donald Trump as special envoy to Greenland. Donald Trump has repeatedly put great pressure on Greenland and the rest of the Kingdom with statements that he wants to take over Greenland.
In addition to being a special envoy, Jeff Landry is also the governor of the state of Louisiana.
In May, he visited Greenland in connection with the Future Greenland business fair in Nuuk, and here Landry also met with the chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) and naalakkersuisoq for foreign affairs, Múte B. Egede (IA).
According to Jens-Frederik Nielsen, it was emphasized from the Greenlandic side at the meeting that the Greenlandic people are not for sale and that the people’s right to self-determination is not up for discussion.
A working group consisting of high-ranking officials from Greenland, Denmark and the USA has been negotiating since January to clarify the disagreements.
