The threat to Starmer’s position, which has been building for months, intensified on Friday when his rival Andy Burnham won a seat in parliament that will allow him to formally put forward his candidacy for party leader.
Media reports say Starmer is discussing his resignation with his wife at their Chequers country residence. However, senior figures in the Labor Party expect him to make a clear statement about his future as early as Monday.
If Starmer resigns or is removed from office, the publication said, it would mark the country’s seventh prime minister in just over a decade – the highest turnover in almost two centuries, reflecting anger at the failure of British governments to improve public services and tackle issues such as illegal immigration.
More than 100 elected MPs from Starmer’s party — about a quarter of all Labor representatives in the House of Commons — have publicly said they want him to resign or set a timetable for his resignation, according to a Reuters count.
The Observer, which did not name its sources, said Starmer had concluded his position was no longer tenable after speaking to ministers, advisers, donors and union leaders.
What preceded: It was reported that members of the Cabinet of Ministers British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be called to set a timetable for his resignation after his main potential challenger, Andy Burnham, opened his way to the party leadership.
Starmer said on Friday that will take part in any struggle for the leadership of the Labor Party.
We will remind: On June 19, the results of the by-elections in the Makerfield district became known – they were won by the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham. This victory paved the way for him to the nomination of his candidacy for the position of Labor leader, and therefore Prime Minister, in opposition to Starmer.
At the same time, Starmer said that eager to see Andy Burnham is in an “important government role” if he is returned to parliament in a by-election.
