According to a press release issued on April 23, 2026, by the St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, in collaboration with private sector partners, has successfully deployed a decommissioned aircraft offshore to establish a new artificial reef, introducing a unique attraction for both local and visiting dive enthusiasts.
The Authority noted that the submerged aircraft has been strategically positioned near the well-known Talata Wreck off Potato Bay and is expected to further enhance the island’s marine environment while strengthening St. Kitts’ reputation as a premier diving destination within the Caribbean.
The release also highlighted the ecological significance of artificial reefs, which contribute to marine conservation by creating habitats that support diverse aquatic species. It further stated that the initiative is expected to bolster local biodiversity and promote the long-term sustainability of surrounding marine ecosystems.
Prior to deployment, the aircraft—formerly located at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (RLBIA)—underwent comprehensive environmental preparation to ensure compliance with marine safety standards and the protection of marine life.
Describing the project as a progressive tourism development initiative, the Authority underscored its alignment with efforts to combine innovation and environmental stewardship, while further advancing St. Kitts’ positioning as a leading sustainable tourism destination in the region.
