The Tigers came into the game having lost nine of their last eleven games since beginning the season with two wins in San Diego.
Detroit had three straight hits to start the bottom of the second inning, and Spencer Torkelson got the Tigers on the board with a single to left field. The Tigers then loaded the bases with two outs before Owen Caissie made a spectacular sliding catch in right field to end the inning.
Miami, which had 12 hits in two consecutive games, took until the eighth inning to get the first batter on base. But then Graham Pauley hit a fly ball that resulted in a double play.
