Anđela Medvidovićrecently Baketićis a woman from Imo who today lives a life that she chose herself, but she came to it by deviating from the imposed path and following her own.
At the age of fourteen, she left for Zagreb, convinced that this was the city where she would stay. That’s how her parents envisioned it: security, government job, life in the city… And it was partly like that. Anđela finished school and studies in Zagreb, and then worked as an intern at the Zagreb infectious disease hospital. Everything seemed to go according to plan.
– In Imotski, people mostly went outside for work, towards Zagreb or Germany. It was somehow assumed that you were heading towards an “easier” life, where you are not physically tired. But it was the other way around for me, I always thought it was better to be physically tired than mentally tired. I started going over the whole story in my head. Will I be able to live in Zagreb for the next 40 years, until retirement?
During this period, he makes a decision that changes everything. He buys two horses from his internship salary and seasonal work and returns to his native Imotski. He admits that this decision was not understood at first.
– I was thinking about whether I would be able to live in Zagreb for the next 40 years or so. Not to live, but to live. And then I decided to try what I wanted as a girl. I always imagined that I would have horses. When I told my parents that I was coming with two horses, they thought I was joking – he says.
She placed the horses in the premises of the former winery “Imota” and is starting from scratch. Today, OPG Medvidović is growing there, which is developing through animal husbandry and tourism. There are horses, cows, goats, sheep, lambs, kids, calves, rabbits and geese on the property.
– Life is enjoyed here. You know what you eat and what you put into yourself. Because honestly, when you see a whole chicken for five euros in the store, you wonder what it actually is? I know how much my chicken eats to grow to that size – he says.
Her philosophy is simple:
– Don’t wait for retirement to start living. You do what you wanted to do as a child, it never really leaves you, you just repress it over time.
