Shock in the Netherlands: Xavi Simons missed the WC due to a serious injury
Tottenham’s Xavi Simons tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a Premier League match, the London club announced.
The Dutch international and former teammate of Benjamin Šešek at Leipzig will have to miss the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA due to an injury.
Simons was carried off the field on a stretcher in the second half of the match with Wolverhampton after a collision with rival defender Hugo Bueno. The twenty-three-year-old midfielder will undergo surgery and then a long recovery.
An emotional note on social networks
After the injury, the footballer announced his great disappointment on social networks that he will not be able to represent the Netherlands at the World Cup this summer. “They say life can be cruel, that’s how I feel today,” wrote Xavi Simons.
The Netherlands will play in Group F with Japan, Sweden and Tunisia at the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19.
