“At the inaugural session of the National Assembly, the European Union flag will return to the facade of the Parliament building alongside the Hungarian and Szekler flags,” Péter Magyar, the prime ministerial candidate of the Tisza Party, winner of the April election, wrote in a Facebook post on Friday morning.
The EU flag had not been displayed on the Hungarian Parliament building for more than 10 years. It was removed from the building in January 2012. Later, after the 2014 election—when the Szekler flag had already been displayed on the parliament building alongside the Hungarian flag—House Speaker László Kövér informed the press that since displaying the EU flag is not mandatory, it would not be raised on the building.
In this regard, Act XXIX of 2004 stipulates that, provided the conditions are met, the European flag must be displayed or hoisted on or in front of public buildings where the national flag must also be displayed or hoisted;
but certain institutions—including the building of the National Assembly—are exempt from this provision.
Thus, the EU flag was not displayed on the Parliament building even when Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1, 2024.
As Hungary Today reported, President Tamás Sulyok had previously convened the inaugural session of the new National Assembly for May 9. Earlier, in connection with the formation of the parliament, it was also mentioned that the members of parliament would take their oaths before the Holy Crown.
