KUCHING (April 16): The Sarawak Consumers Association (PPS) has welcomed the Sarawak government’s special assistance package, describing it as a timely measure to help the public cope with rising living costs driven by the Middle East conflict.
In a statement, PPS said the increase in the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) is a key step in supporting consumers, particularly those in the low- and middle-income groups, to continue affording essential items such as food, groceries and daily necessities without excessive financial strain.
It added that the 25 per cent electricity bill discount would help reduce monthly household expenses, allowing consumers to better manage their finances.
At the same time, PPS said the 50 per cent rental discount for small traders is expected to indirectly benefit consumers by helping to keep prices of goods and services at reasonable levels.
“These measures are crucial in ensuring consumer wellbeing is safeguarded, especially amid global economic uncertainties that have a ripple effect on local prices,” it said.
PPS president, Wynson Ong Teck Ping, described the initiatives as proactive and significant in helping consumers manage cost-of-living pressures.
“PPS hopes that every form of assistance provided will have a direct impact on the rakyat and ensure that consumers are not further burdened by rising prices of goods and services,” he said.
He also urged traders not to arbitrarily increase prices, noting that existing subsidies, including fuel subsidies, remain in place and should help stabilise operating costs.
“Unreasonable price hikes must be avoided in order to safeguard consumer interests,” he added.
PPS also advised consumers to spend prudently, avoid wastage and prioritise essential needs.
It encouraged the public to play an active role in monitoring market prices, adding that any premises found imposing unjustified increases can be reported directly to the organisation for further action.
PPS further called for stronger monitoring of essential goods prices to ensure consumers truly benefit from the assistance announced.

PPS reaffirmed its commitment to championing consumer rights and working with relevant parties to ensure policies and initiatives deliver positive outcomes for the overall well-being of the rakyat.
