May Day is always a precious opportunity to look honestly at the condition of workers. In San Marino the unemployment rate is very low: a positive figure but which alone is not enough to tell the truth. Because today, unfortunately, having a job is not an automatic guarantee of a dignified life, it no longer means arriving peacefully at the end of the month, nor being able to afford a house, start a family, plan for the future. In recent years, price growth due to inflation has reduced purchasing power and made daily expenses heavier while wages have remained the same. How can you live like this?
For RETE this is a central point. Work must once again become a tool for emancipation and social evolution, not the minimum condition for survival. Those who work must be able to count on a salary adequate to the real cost of living, capable of guaranteeing autonomy, security and prospects.
Connected to this, there is another great challenge to overcome, the one against precarious employment. A battle that we have always carried on, because the precariousness of work weighs on citizens’ daily choices, on their ability to access a mortgage, rent a house, find stability.
For this reason, during the ongoing discussion on the Family Law, we presented an amendment that reduces the maximum duration of a fixed-term contract to 12 months, a term that the “Lonfernini Decree” of 2023 had even raised from 18 to 24 months.
RETE wants the transition to permanent employment to take place within a reasonable time and without further delays so that workers can access the greater guarantees and benefits offered by a stable job sooner.
In recent days, in Commission IV there has been a lot of discussion about the birth rate and family: crucial issues in a small country like ours that cannot be addressed with bonuses and subsidies.
Contributions help but do not solve: we need to permanently create the conditions under which people can build a future for themselves. A young couple is not encouraged to have children by impromptu financial help. To look ahead without fear, they must be able to count with certainty on a stable job, an adequate salary, affordable housing, efficient nursery schools, schools and healthcare.
This May Day must be a reminder of political responsibility and the courage to act in the social sphere. There is still a lot of work to do and NETWORK is there!
