The British government reiterates that the UK will not give up the Falkland Islands. In a leaked e-mail from the United States Department of Defense, it is suggested to reconsider support for Britain’s claim to the islands due to Britain’s alleged indifference in the war with Iran.
The email in question discusses possible methods of punishing Britain for not participating in US attacks on Iran. One of the proposed methods involves revising support for Britain’s claim to “colonies”, including the Falkland Islands, for example.
The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic about 480 km southeast of the coast of Argentina. The population is around 3,600, mainly native Falkland Islanders of British origin who speak English as their mother tongue and are British citizens. The islands were uninhabited before Europeans settled there. In 1982, the Argentines invaded the islands but were driven out by British forces after a 74-day war in which hundreds of people died. The Argentines have not yet given up their claim to the islands.
“We could not be clearer about the UK’s position on the Falkland Islands. It remains the same. It remains unchanged. Control over the islands is in the hands of the UK and the islands’ right to self-determination is paramount,” the press representative of the British Prime Minister’s Office told Guardian.
The leaders of the Conservative Party, the Reform Party and the Liberal Democrats have also reacted angrily, and they all assume that the email was leaked deliberately to provoke the British.
During the 1982 conflict, the United States provided support to Britain in the form of arms and access to satellite imagery. Life on the islands has been stagnant since then, but as mentioned earlier, Argentina has never given up its claim and Javier Milei, a close ally of Donald Trump, is now sitting on the presidency in Buenos Aires.
