Washington, United States He american government is studying increasing the refugee admission quota, currently at 7,500 people, the lowest historically, declared this Thursday Andrew Veprek, Undersecretary of State for the Office of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM).
Donald Trump’s administration drastically reduced the number of refugees in fiscal year 2026 (which ends in September of this year) compared to the previous quota, which was 125,000 people.
Most of the asylum candidates admitted are white farmers from South Africa, who Washington said were at risk of death and discrimination, something refuted by Pretoria.
“It is ultimately the president’s decision but I think we are clearly thinking about it for the next fiscal year, even sooner”Veprek explained at an event organized by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
““We are examining the pace of reinstatement, how it is going”he added, referring to those refugees.
Veprek would not confirm whether the quota could be expanded to other nationalities or ethnicities.
The resettlement of refugees in the United States became the responsibility of the Department of Health since January of this year, to alleviate the administrative burden of the State Department, he indicated.
The fight against illegal immigration was one of Trump’s flags at the beginning of his second term, as well as the establishment of major restrictions on the legal entry of migrants and qualified workers.
Many of these limitations have been litigated in court, and the Supreme Court must rule on the policy of stopping the entry of asylum candidates at the border with Mexico, or the temporary protection program (TPS) for Haitians or Syrians.
Veprek assured that the anti-immigration policy will be maintained and that negotiations with other countries are increasing to readmit their expelled migrants.
“Venezuelans want to return to their country, “The government of Venezuela wants Venezuelans to return, we want it,” he asserted.
