New measures to protect women
Indian Railways already has separate reserved rooms keeping in mind the safety and convenience of women passengers. However, some male passengers knowingly or on the pretext of crowding get into the women’s room. If you do this from now on, you will have to pay an extreme fee. Strict action will be taken against any male passenger traveling in a compartment reserved for women, according to a new Railway Ministry notification. Besides, he will have to pay a huge fine.
If you make a mistake, how much money will be fined?
On-Spot Fines: From now on, any such mistake means that if a male passenger travels in a women’s room, he will be fined Rs 2,500. Earlier this fine amount was only 500 rupees. That is, the penalty has been increased 5 times in one stroke.
Remove from the room: Doing so will result in the male passenger being immediately removed from the women’s room in addition to a fine. TTE can cancel his ticket or pass if necessary.
Courts and Additional Penalties: Note that these fines may increase further. If a passenger refuses to pay the on-spot fine, the matter will be referred directly to the court. If found guilty in that case, the fine can go up to Rs 5,000.
Who is exempt?
However, there are exemptions for transgenders in some cases. Railways has made it clear that transgender persons have been exempted from this rule. According to the ‘Transgender Persons Act, 2019’ no action will be taken against them under this section.
What to do if you get up by mistake?
A male passenger may get into the ladies coach by mistake many times due to pressure of crowd or rush. According to railway officials, there is no need to panic.
1 As soon as the next station arrives or when you get the chance, change the room quickly and go to the normal room.
2 Explain your mistake to the TTE or RPF staff on duty in the train and explain the situation.
How much is the fine now if you don’t buy a ticket?
Railways has informed that not only boarding in ladies coach, but the fine for traveling without ticket has also been increased from 250 taka to 500 taka. Apart from this, a fine of up to 2,000 rupees will be imposed for smoking or haggling in the train in certain cases. The railway administration has requested all passengers to strictly follow these rules so as not to face any legal complications on the journey.
