For a month in a row, thousands of citizens have followed the protests in Tirana against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of corruption, lack of transparency and favoring the luxury resort project associated with Jared Kushner in the protected area of Zvrnec.
The protesters demand the resignation of Rama and the banning of the project, while the echo of the protests has crossed the borders of Albania.
Recently, the German public television ZDF has devoted an article to the developments in the country, reflecting the accusations of the protesters and the civil resistance that has been going on for almost a month.
“In the Albanian capital, Tirana, on Saturday evening, thousands of people protested again against a planned project for a luxury complex on the Adriatic coast.
The planned luxury resort will be built in a protected natural area near Zvërnec, about 150 kilometers southwest of Tirana. Behind this construction project stands a company of Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Trump.
Environmentalists warn that this area is a habitat for more than 200 species of birds, including flamingos and the endangered curly pelican. They criticize a change in the law from 2024, according to which the construction of luxury hotels in protected areas has become possible. The Albanian government calls this change a clarification of the defense status.
There have been repeated protests for almost a month. The protesters accuse the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, among other things, of corruption and lack of transparency – and demand, among other things, Rama’s resignation. He and his government, despite strong protests, have stuck to the real estate development project.” emphasizes ZDF.
