At least twelve people were wounded yesterday in Toledo, in the US state of Ohio, when two attackers exchanged fire, the police said, according to the Reuters agency.
Two of the wounded are in critical condition, the police announced at a press conference. The victims range in age from 14 to 61, the police said.
The incident involved two people who shot at each other, the police announced.
“I’ve been to a lot of crime scenes, but this is by far the best,” police Lt. Dan Gerken told reporters at a news conference.
The search for the suspects is ongoing as part of what Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan said is a “pretty active” investigation.
“We have some evidence and we’re checking certain leads,” Heffernan said.
Investigators are talking to multiple people and reviewing surveillance footage, Gerken said.
George Krall, Toledo’s director of public safety, made a public appeal for cell phone footage that could help police find the suspects.
“I know there is information. Please help us help you,” Krall said.
Officers were dispatched around 5:37 p.m. to a report of a person shot near the Old West End festival, Toledo police said in a Facebook post, adding that “multiple victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.”
There were several hundred people at the event, Kral said.
“This is one of the most famous festivals in Toledo and it’s a shame that something like this had to spoil it,” he said.
Not counting the incident in Toledo, the Gun Violence Archive website has recorded 171 mass shootings in the United States this year. The site defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people, not including the gunman, are wounded by a firearm.
