PRIME Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar departed Trinidad on Saturday night for the United States to attend the funeral of a relative.
In a statement, the Office of the Prime Minister said Persad-Bissessar will be out of the country until Wednesday, June 24.
During her absence, Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John will serve as acting Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister’s brother-in-law, Michael L Ahamad, died on June 16.
He was the son of Haroun Ahamad and Margaret Gibson.
Ahamad is survived by his wife, Sally Savitri Ahamad; son, Richard Ahamad; daughter, Karen Ahamad Tsuda; and grandchildren, Minami and Kousei Tsuda.
He was the brother of Merle Ahamad (deceased), Marlene Dean, Anne Marie Ahamad, Anderson Ahamad, Judy Ramsamooj and Harold Ahamad (deceased), and brother-in-law to Persad-Bissessar and Wattie Newton.
“He will always be in our hearts and never be forgotten,” his son Richard Ahamad told the Express.
Ahamad’s funeral is scheduled for today at Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Rochelle, New York.
