A MARACAS VALLEY, St Joseph, man who had been acquitted of a 2020 double murder and released earlier this month was ambushed, shot and killed yesterday afternoon near his home.
Police said that around 5.30 p.m. Warren Small, also known as “Quincy” and “Blacks”, was liming near a bar in the La Sieva, Maracas Valley, area when a suspect walked up to him and opened fire. The shooter then fled.
Small sustained multiple gunshots to his head and chest and was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope by relatives where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In 2020, Small had been charged with the murders of Darrie Simon and Sharlene Ramkissoon which occurred at Acono Junction, Maracas Valley on March 3 that year. He had also been charged with the unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition.
Earlier this month, Small appeared before Justice Nalini Singh in a judge-alone trial where the State’s case hinged on the evidence presented by the relatives of one of the deceased who claimed she recognised Small during the shooting when a bandanna covering the gunman’s face had slipped briefly. The witness also stated that she had known Small since childhood but Justice Singh found that conditions in which the observation had been made raised serious concerns.
Justice Singh also criticised the investigation of the murders which she concluded further put the identification of the accused into even more doubt. Small’s case was then discharged on all counts.
