In KNI’s product division, Pilersuisoq, unsold food was discarded for a double-digit million amount in the period from 1 April 2025 to the end of March 2026. It is not economically appropriate, the self-government-owned company acknowledges. In earlier years, the discarded goods were even more valuable.
Pilersuisoq under KNI has a total of 67 stores in 64 towns and villages. The shops are spread from Siorapaluk to Aappilattoq and Ittoqqortoormiit. In many places, Pilersuisoq is the only place where residents can shop.
KNI A/S has just published its accounts for the period from 1 April 2025 to the end of March 2026. The self-governed company had a profit before tax of DKK 152.4 million in the financial year, writes Sermitsiaq on Friday.
In its annual report, the company also describes the cost of food in Pilersuisoq’s stores not being sold. Food to the value of DKK 11.2 million was thrown out by the employees of Pilersuisoq. It is a waste of both labor and money, the company writes.
Food waste represents both a waste of resources and a financial burden, and therefore the reduction of scraps is an important area of effort in the Goods Division, writes KNI A/S in its annual report.
Throw out higher value foods
In previous years, Pilersuisoq threw away food with an even higher value. In the financial year 2021/22, food to the value of DKK 24.4 million was thrown away and in 2024/25 to the value of DKK 15.2 million. Therefore, the result is now the best in recent years. It is also something that the company has focused on in recent years, it writes.
There is also an increased focus on maximizing the utilization of food, e.g. through the use of goods with a short shelf life in fast food production and reduction of disposals related to profits, writes the company.
They want to maintain that, and they plan to do so.
– The goods division plans new activities every quarter to maintain and strengthen the development, they write.
The annual report does not elaborate on which new initiatives are to be launched.
