Did the Dutch national team ever have a more fashionable shirt than the one in which they warmed up for the practice match against Algeria last week? Black, with a yellow, orange and red baroque design that is reminiscent of the style of the Italian fashion house Versace. From the same series also comes the blue jacket that the players wear when the national anthem is sung, a hoodie, training pants and a fleece.
Designs by the Dutch streetwear brand Patta, commissioned by Nike, which selected partners in each country participating in the World Cup for one of the so-called pre match shirts. In France, for example, this was fashion house Jacquemus, which, unlike Patta, normally does not sell sportswear or shoes. Patta already designed a practice shirt for FC Barcelona in 2023.
“We wanted to create something that immediately stands out,” says Guillaume Schmidt, one of the two founders and owners of Patta, about the warm-up shirt for the Dutch national team. “We first thought about flames, but that would have only been decorative. We wanted that too blackness radiates, and hip hop, because it is also Patta.”
Zeist is like a catwalk
And so the idea arose to design a design with references to the Netherlands and the backgrounds of the players of the Dutch national team. “A shirt that represents the new Netherlands.”
Lions can be found in the design, tulips, but also Surinamese alas kondrenecklace (all countries), a link chain with charms that honors the Surinamese multicultural society and shields of the cities from which players come – not of all players of course, because national coach Ronald Koeman had not yet completed his selection when the shirt was produced.
Schmidt immediately thought the style suited the Dutch team well. “When you see them get off in Zeist, it’s like a catwalk.” And the players were immediately enthusiastic, captain Virgil van Dijk in the lead. To his surprise, so did the KNVB. “I expected that we would have to have a conversation for a while.”
The Dutch team will also wear the shirts again this Monday evening during the warm-up for the practice match in New York against Uzbekistan.
