September 17 for internal nominations… and October 8 for official filing of lists
With the start of the countdown to filing nominations for the local elections, scheduled for next November 28, the political formations are still on the hunt for qualified candidates, betting on them to run in the competition, at a time when the process of receiving files and completing the proposed names continues across the various states and municipalities.
Despite the early preparation for this electoral date, a number of parties have not yet closed their lists and continue to make appeals to those wishing to run from within and outside its ranks, searching for names that meet the required conditions and are able to cover the largest possible number of municipal and state popular councils.
Parties are currently moving on more than one front. While some structures have begun collecting the files of those wishing to run, others are continuing their contacts to attract new names, especially in municipalities where the lists are not yet complete, as political formations have set internal deadlines for receiving candidacy applications, extending until September 17 of this year, before moving on to studying the files, selecting names, and arranging them on the lists.
Nomination calls were not limited to limited parties, but also included major political formations, such as the National Liberation Front party, which opened the door to activists from within the party as well as those wishing to run from outside it, with the requirement of competence, integrity and transparency in the proposed names, as the relevant structures began receiving files in anticipation of a decision on the composition of the lists.
At the same pace, the Movement for Society for Peace issued an appeal to its activists across the various states and also opened the way for people from outside the movement to join its lists and run for municipal and state popular councils, which expands the search for names at a time when the process of controlling lists at the local level continues.
In the coming days, attention within the parties will turn to the sorting and selection process, after the doors of candidacy were opened to a larger number of those wishing to run in the elections. Receiving the files according to them does not mean that their owners are automatically included in the lists, as the proposed names go through a study phase before they are arranged and their final composition is decided, especially since each list needs to respect the applicable legal and regulatory conditions.
The pace of this process is increasing as the date of next October 8 approaches, which is the last date for depositing lists of candidates with the Independent National Elections Authority, which puts the parties in front of a limited period of time to complete the process of receiving, selecting, and controlling the lists before depositing them.
Given the large number of municipal and state popular councils concerned with the elections, the parties’ mission does not stop at choosing names to compete in a limited number of regions, but rather extends to completing lists across the various states and municipalities that have decided to participate in them, which explains the continued calls directed to those wishing to run even from outside party organizations, in parallel with the work carried out by local structures to control names.
In this race, the political formations are looking for candidates who meet the legal conditions, in addition to names that have a presence at the local level and can be presented on the electoral lists, while the final decision remains linked to the process of studying the files and arranging the candidates before reaching the official filing stage.
As the internal deadlines set by several parties for receiving candidacy applications approach, the process of preparing lists is expected to enter a more decisive stage in the coming days, after preparations have shifted from searching for those wishing to run to sifting through files and determining the names that will actually appear in the November 28 local race.
