Khawaja Asif On Indus Water Treaty : After ‘surrender’ to India in Operation Sindoor, Pakistan again threatened war (Pakistan Threatens India). Now the threat was heard in the mouth of Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. He said this in a recent television interview.
What is the message of conflict again?
Basically, the Modi government took a major decision on water distribution in Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. At that time, India asked for a fresh review of the Indus River Water Sharing Agreement. It is said that one by one the water of the Indus River will be diverted and used for the benefit of the countrymen. Pakistan has been protesting India’s decision ever since. Recently, the fresh comments of Water Power Minister CR Patil on the Indus Water Treaty added fuel to this fire.
This time there is a new tension between India and Pakistan around this agreement. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khwaja Asif has threatened a direct war after receiving an indication from India to cut off Pakistan’s water supply. In a television interview, Pakistan’s defense minister said that if Pakistan realizes that its water security is under serious threat, then Islamabad will consider taking military action against India.
What exactly did the Pak Defense Minister say?
In a recent interview to ARY News, Khwaja Asif said, “The moment we realize that our national security is being compromised—and water is part of our national security—we will go to war against India.” However, the Pakistani defense minister did not stop there. He further said that if India tries to cut off the water supply too quickly or divert the course, as evidenced, then Pakistan will have no option but war.
What is the reason behind this sudden excitement?
Water Minister CR Patil recently commented on the Indus Water Sharing Agreement. In an interview, he said, in one and a half or two years, i.e. by June 2028, the water flow of the Indus River may be completely stopped in Pakistan. Not a single drop of Sindh water from India will go to Pakistan.
Pakistan’s internal water crisis and ‘economic genocide’
In the context of this conflict with India, Pakistan itself is suffering from severe internal water crisis. About one-third of the country’s people live in dire water shortages, especially in agricultural regions like Sindh and Balochistan.
Sukkur Barrage Crisis: Water flow in the basin of Sukkur Barrage, one of the main lifelines of Pakistan’s agriculture, has drastically reduced. According to Sindh Irrigation Department, there is 64.1% water shortage in North West Canal, 38% in Rice Canal and 82% in Dadu Canal.
Provincial Conflict: Due to this acute crisis, internal conflicts have also started between the states of Pakistan. Sindh leaders alleged that Punjab was illegally withdrawing 21% more water (about 53,394 cusecs) than their allotted allocation of 44,000 cusecs.
What is India saying?
However, despite Pakistan’s threat of war, India has yet to give any official response. However, it is believed that New Delhi will soon react strongly to these comments by threatening war.
