The spirit of celebrating Samoa’s 64thIndependence was alive and well at Pualele Outrigger Canoe Club’s Moata’a base even before the official celebrations.
The Pualele Va’a Cup 2026, held on May 23 May, brought together paddlers, supporters, families and volunteers to celebrate their passion for the sport. It was more than just a day of racing.
The event was a powerful reminder of how sport has the ability to unite communities, inspire teamwork, and strengthen the deep connection people here share with the ocean.
Behind every paddle stroke was a story of perseverance, passion and purpose. From juniors taking to the water with excitement and determination, to experienced masters guiding their crews with wisdom and discipline, the competition showcased the beauty of va’a as a sport that welcomes all generations. It was not only about crossing the finish line first– it was about the friendships built, the respect shown on and off the water, and the collective love for the ocean that brings the paddling community together.
Despite this year’s event drawing an impressive number of paddlers, sponsors, and supporters alike, the real winner on the day was the sport of va’a.
“The Taumeasina Va’a Cup 2026 was more than just a regatta — it was a celebration of va’a, culture and community. We are incredibly grateful for the collective effort of Pualele, the support of SOCA (Samoa Outrigger Canoe Association), and the generosity of all the businesses and individuals who came on board to support our vision. It was community support at its finest, and we’re excited to build on this momentum as we look ahead to Taumeasina Va’a Cup 2027,“ said Tiumalu Maxine Sausi-Mailo, President, Pualele Outrigger Canoeing Club.
There were plenty of standout moments throughout the day, especially from the overall winners, Nafanua Kalapu Alo Paopao, and the two winning teams, Ulua Paddling Club for the men, and the women’s champions, Pualele Manaful Leiona, whose performances captured the energy and strength of the event. Blending juniors, open and masters paddlers into powerful crews, these teams demonstrated how experience, youth and determination can combine to achieve great results.
Yet beyond the medals and trophies, the Pualele Va’a Cup highlighted something even more meaningful — the role sport plays in creating connection and belonging. This regatta wasmore than a race. It wass a celebration of discipline, teamwork and respect for the ocean that sustains and connects Pacific communities. Every paddle entering the water reflected not only a competitive spirit, but also gratitude for the environment and traditions that continue to shape the sport of outrigger canoeing or va’a today.
As the final races concluded and prizegiving wrapped up right on schedule, the overwhelming feeling across the bay was one of pride, joy and togetherness. The event ran smoothly, everyone remained safe, and the positive energy throughout the day showed the incredible impact sport can have in bringing people together.
The Pualele Va’a Cup 2026 was not simply a sporting event — it was a celebration of community, resilience and the enduring bond between people and the ocean.
