Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 4, 2026
— The criminal justice system recorded two significant developments this week, as one man was sentenced to prison for murder while another was formally charged with attempted murder and several firearm-related offences in separate matters.
According to information released by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, Akeem Whyte of Taylor’s Housing has been sentenced to twenty-four (24) years in His Majesty’s Prison for the murder of James Morton of Lower Monkey Hill, St. Peter’s.
Police said the fatal incident occurred on June 19, 2024, and was preceded by a traffic-related altercation in Newtown on June 18, 2024, which left Morton severely injured. Whyte later pleaded guilty to the offence on February 20, 2026.
The sentence was handed down on June 3, 2026, at the Basseterre High Court by His Lordship Justice Patrick Thompson Jr. Time already spent on remand will be deducted from the custodial sentence.
In a separate matter, police have charged Mozhan Isles of Taylors Village in connection with an incident that occurred at Baker’s Corner on May 28, 2026.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force reported that Isles faces five charges: Attempted Murder, Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm in a Public Place, and Possession of a Firearm to Endanger Life.
Authorities confirmed that the charges were formally laid on May 30, 2026, at the Basseterre Police Station following investigations into the matter.
The two cases represent separate developments but underscore ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the courts to address serious violent crime and firearm-related offences within the Federation.
While Whyte’s case has concluded with sentencing, proceedings involving Isles are now before the court.
