She assessed that citizens have the right to know who truly supports the greater democratic influence of voters, and who is running away from it.
“The days for the completion of the electoral reform are passing, and on one of the most important issues – the introduction of open lists – there is still no clear position of the majority of political subjects. The URA submitted its proposal and put it on the table, but instead of an answer, we are witnessing silence,” announced Novaković Đurović.
She reminded that almost all the parties that today constitute the parliamentary majority have promised open lists as a key step towards the democratization of the electoral system for years in their programs and pre-election campaigns.
“Citizens remember those promises well. Now is the moment to show whether they were sincere or if they were only used to collect political points. There is no more room for excuses and delays,” Novaković Đurović pointed out.
She especially appealed to the parties of the parliamentary majority to make a public statement about the URA proposal and to take responsibility for the final outcome of the electoral reform.
“If there is political will, open lists can be voted on quickly. If support is lacking, citizens will know very clearly who blocked the change that almost everyone publicly advocated. That’s why we call on the parliamentary majority to announce its position without delay and show whether it stands behind the promises made,” concluded Novaković Đurović.
