Jean-Noël Poirier has been appointed as the French consul in Greenland and will formally start in his new position today, Friday. Now he just needs a building.
President Emmanuel Macron’s promise has come true on 6 February, as France now has a new consul at a new consulate in Nuuk.
The new consul is called Jean-Noël Poirier and has arrived in Nuuk as planned on Friday at the same time as a delegation from Canada, who are now opening their new consulate in the city.
However, the French consul does not have a physical consulate yet. The French are still looking for suitable premises for their new representation, says a spokesman.
According to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new consul’s task is to develop the cultural, scientific and economic ties between Greenland and France.
Jean-Noël Poirier has previously been the French ambassador to Vietnam and was a diplomat in Libya. He was formally appointed earlier this week.
The new French consulate was promised by President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Nuuk on June 15, 2025.
– We have decided to open a new consulate general here in Nuuk to be closer to you and stand by your side, the president said at the time.
France was previously represented in Nuuk by Krissie Berthelsen Winberg in a position as honorary consul.
