It’s already a record season for FC Bayern, but the 13th championship in 14 years, the 35th overall and fixed early on Sunday evening, is just the start of a possible third treble. The semi-finals of the DFB Cup against Leverkusen await on Wednesday, followed by the semi-finals of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. The Bundesliga is only considered a minimum goal in Munich. This time, however, they broke their own goal record: they have already scored 109 times, the previous record was 101 goals (1971/72) and there are still four rounds left. Harry Kane alone scored 32 times in 27 Bundesliga appearances, new signing Luis Díaz contributed 15 goals, Michael Olise 12. But: Bayern’s goal scorers can now be found throughout the entire squad and in practically all positions.
There was no serious national opponent in sight. Dortmund came closest; at the end of February, Bayern ended all hopes of a title duel with a 3-2 win at Borussia. Stuttgart, Leipzig or Leverkusen couldn’t keep up.
Although not the first choice, coach Vincent Kompany proved to be a stroke of luck. In his second season at Bayern, he stabilized the team and promoted young players like Lennart Karl. With clever rotation, he kept spirits high and minimized injuries. Leverkusen’s sensational 2023/24 championship was just an outlier, FC Bayern is about to start another successful streak.
Premier League
The title fight in England is completely open. Thanks to ex-Salzburg player Erling Haaland (23rd goal of the season), Manchester City celebrated a 2-1 win in the big game of the 32nd round against Arsenal. The Citizens are only three points away from the Gunners, and Pep Guardiola’s team has played one less game. After losing points, Pep Guardiola is back on the fast track after initial personnel problems. Arsenal, most recently runners-up three times and without a championship since 2004 with the end of the Arsène Wenger era, is in danger of failing again? Is reaching the Champions League semi-finals (against Atlético Madrid) too much of a double burden at the end of the season?
With a win on Wednesday in the supplementary game against Burnley, who are practically relegated, City would take the lead in the table with five rounds to go before the end of the season. In what is supposed to be his last season in Manchester, Guardiola has the chance to win his seventh championship title in the “motherland of football”.
LaLiga
With seven rounds to go and nine points ahead of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona can no longer afford to defend their title in the Spanish championship. On May 10th in the home Clásico against our arch-rivals we could be certain.
In fact, Camp Nou is looking forward to the future for the first time in a long time. Coach Hansi Flick’s project is really picking up speed, Barcelona once again has a young squad that is reminiscent of previous glory days; The offensive spectacle is back in town thanks to Pedri, Yamal and Co. The dramatic exit in the Champions League and the Cup against Atlético Madrid does little to change that.
President Joan Laporta, who has just been confirmed in office, would like to extend his contract with coach Flick, and the German has already made it clear that Barcelona will be his last stop. The transfer market is primarily looking for a central defender. Because Barca can currently field perhaps the most talented starting eleven in Europe, but they still lack the depth and stability to win the Champions League for the first time since 2015 in addition to the championship and the Clásicos against Real.
Series A
The mission of defending the title is almost hopeless for SSC Napoli in the Italian championship. After a 2-0 home defeat against Lazio Rome, the southern Italians are twelve points behind Inter Milan with five rounds remaining. The leader, who was about to return to the Serie A throne, defeated Cagliari 3-0.
The Nerazzurri, the only club to have been part of Serie A since its inception, have won the Scudetto 20 times, the Coppa Italia nine times and are the last calcio club to win the Champions League in 2010. Inter is one of eight clubs, alongside Celtic Glasgow (1967), Ajax Amsterdam (1972), PSV Eindhoven (1988), Manchester United (1999), Barcelona (2009, 2015), Bayern Munich (2013, 2020), Manchester City (2023; Guardiola achieved this feat for the second time) and Paris Saint-Germain (2025; the second treble for Luis Enrique), in a season won the big triple (championship, cup and EC of the national champions/Champions League).
The title race in France has been reignited after Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Lyon. They are still one point ahead of their pursuers Lens with one game less, but Luis Enrique’s team also has to survive in the Champions League (semi-final against Bayern).
On the penultimate matchday (May 13th) there will be a summit meeting with Lens, at the latest then the fifth championship in a row should be won. “Did you want a more exciting championship? You have it now,” explained Luis Enrique after his team’s fifth league defeat.
Bundesliga
The 1-1 draw between Sturm Graz and Lask postponed the preliminary decision in the Austrian championship. Two points separate the league leaders and defending champions from Styria from the Upper Austrians, who have become high-flyers with Dietmar Kühbauer. Lask, Austria’s first champion and double winner who did not come from Vienna in 1965, can continue to flirt with the double this season.
Five rounds still have to be completed, so the direct duel will take place again on Wednesday (8.30 p.m.), this time in Graz. Fabio Ingolitsch’s team won the league in 2024 and 2025, the third title in a row would further fuel the stadium question in the Styrian capital. Will the summer election not lead to a rethinking of city politics? Currently, no other club in Austria can hold a candle to the “Schwoazen” – except for Kühbauer “conjuring up” a new offensive from his top hat.
