National Assembly Aims for May 9 Inaugural Session

Negotiations to prepare for the inaugural session of Hungary’s National Assembly began on Friday, April 17, at the Parliament Building, with parties discussing key procedural and political steps ahead of the formation of the new legislature.

Based on the provisions of the Fundamental Law and the Rules of Procedure, the main topics of discussion include preparations for the verification of mandates, the procedure for taking the oaths of office, preparations for the inaugural session, the determination of the order of business, preparations for the election of officers, the establishment of the National Assembly’s committee system, and issues concerning foreign affairs and diplomatic bodies will also be discussed.

The meeting is chaired by the Director General of the National Assembly Office.

The Tisza Party is organizing a major national event for the inaugural session of the new National Assembly on Kossuth Square in front of Parliament, announced Péter Magyar, the party’s chairman and prime ministerial candidate, on Friday in Budapest.

He said that they are proposing May 9 as the date for the inaugural session, specifically on a weekend so that as many people as possible can attend the event in front of Parliament.

The politician stated that they are also proposing that parliament elect the prime minister during the inaugural session and that he take the oath of office that same day. “There has been no precedent for this since 1990,” he noted, adding that the parliamentary groups had accepted his proposals.

“The Tisza Party proposes that the inaugural session of the new National Assembly be held on May 9, and that the new prime minister be elected on that same day,” confirmed László Toroczkai, chairman of the Our Homeland Movement (“Mi Hazánk”), on Friday at the Parliament Building following the talks.

He also revealed that the Our Homeland Movement is once again nominating Dóra Dúró for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Magyar also mentioned that Gergely Gulyás, minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, who participated in the consultation, requested that the committees hear the ministers no later than Tuesday following the election of the prime minister.

Speaking after the meeting as a representative of Fidesz–KDNP, Gulyás said the party needs a parliamentary group that could “symbolize renewal” following the election results.

In response to the suggestion that Viktor Orbán had announced a restructuring of the Fidesz parliamentary group—and that not necessarily those who would originally be entitled to seats based on the list would sit in parliament—Gulyás remarked:

since they had not prepared for this election result, it is practical to have a faction that clearly demonstrates the party’s renewal.

“It is clear that we need a faction that can both symbolize Fidesz’s renewal and include people who are well-versed in policy issues, even those with government experience,” he said.
