The Bishop of Kosovo, Monsignor Dodë Gjergji, reacted after the decision against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
In a written statement to the media, he emphasizes that this decision has caused deep bitterness and has brought back the feeling of historical injustices.
“The decision of the Specialized Chambers reminds us once again that the ‘ordeal’ of historical injustices continues. And we have no choice but to unite to convince justice to be fair to us”, stated Gjergji.
He called for pain not to cloud reason and anger not to dim wisdom.
According to him, any reaction should be measured, peaceful and responsible. Opposition to the decision, he said, should be done through legal and institutional channels.
“The anger of a people is understandable only when it is transformed into a force to seek the truth and justice”, he emphasized.
Gjergji asked the institutions and the political class of Kosovo to show responsibility and coordination.
He added that divisions should be put aside when the freedom, dignity and historical memory of the people are affected.
“Today we must unite as a nation: around the truth, our dignity and responsibility for the future. So as to preserve the purity of our people’s struggle for freedom, to strengthen friendships with those who stood by us in the most difficult days and to rebuild the trust that was hurt after liberation”, stated Gjergji.
The bishop called for Kosovo to preserve its friendship with the countries that stood by it during the war. He also called for the rebuilding of the damaged trust after liberation.
Gjergji said that the Church cannot judge people or justice, but neither can it be silent in the face of this situation.
“Our task is to seek the truth without hatred, justice without revenge and reconciliation without forgetting what is right,” he said.
In the end, Gjergji said that Kosovo does not need more noise, but wisdom, unity, stability and trust.
On September 16, the Special Court in The Hague sentenced former president Hashim Thaçi to 25 years, Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years, Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.
