The Prime Minister writes on the anniversary of attacks in the USA that the fight for free democratic societies continues.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) remembers on Facebook on Friday the approximately 3,000 people who lost their lives in attacks in the USA 25 years ago.
– Today we remember the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives that day. And all those who have since been struck by terror in all the cities and countries that have carried the same fear.
– We also remember the many heroes who in the following years have fought for our safety abroad and at home. Against the ugly face of terror. Against dark forces that wish us harm, she writes.
Two hijacked planes flew 11. September 2001 at short intervals directly into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, and the towers later collapsed.
In addition to the attacks in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC, a fourth hijacked plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to enter the cockpit.
The total official death toll from the attacks – not including attackers – was 2,977 people.
– Today, hatred and radicalization are still spreading. Often online and faster than ever. The world faces more conflicts and more fault lines than we hoped for a quarter of a century ago.
– Therefore, today is a strong reminder that the fight for an open, free and democratic society must be fought every single day, writes Mette Frederiksen.
The attack in the USA led to the USA launching an effort in, among other places, Afghanistan, which lasted for 20 years and in which Denmark participated. 44 Danish soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan.
The militant Islamic movement al-Qaeda was behind the attack in the United States, and it triggered an intense hunt for the movement’s leader, Osama bin Laden.
US commandos killed him in an operation in Pakistan in May 2011.
